Short description (directory listing): You.com is a Palo Alto AI company founded in 2020 by Richard Socher and Bryan McCann. It provides real-time web search, content extraction, cited answers, agentic research and inference APIs that ground AI applications and agents in current information, sold mainly on usage-based pricing to developers and enterprises.
03About You.com
Think of an AI assistant as a very smart student who read lots of books — but stopped reading before today. It cannot know this morning's news on its own. You.com is like giving that student a live internet connection: when a question needs fresh facts, You.com quickly finds current web pages, hands them to the AI, and the AI answers using those pages — with links so you can check.
Illustrative example only: Ask “What happened in markets today?” — the AI alone may not know, but with You.com's search it can look up today's sources first, then answer.
You.com is an artificial intelligence company that sells the information layer for AI applications. Large language models are trained on fixed snapshots of data, so on their own they cannot know what happened this morning, what a price is today, or what a regulator published last week. You.com's products address that gap: its Web Search API returns live, ranked web and news results as structured data; its Contents API extracts clean page text from known URLs; its Answer and Research APIs go further, synthesising cited responses and multi-step research from retrieved sources; and its Inference Router, launched in October 2026, routes requests to third-party open-weight models with web grounding built in.
The company was founded in August 2020 by Richard Socher and Bryan McCann, both natural language processing researchers from Salesforce, and launched a consumer search engine in public beta in November 2021. That product competed directly with conventional search, emphasising personalisation and privacy. As generative AI spread, You.com added conversational search through YouChat and, in December 2022, stated it was the first consumer-facing language model connected to the live web with citations — a claim made by the company itself. From 2024 the strategy shifted decisively: a September 2024 Series B reframed You.com as an enterprise AI productivity and infrastructure business, and a $100 million Series C in September 2025, at a reported $1.5 billion valuation, funded the API platform.
Today You.com's customers are primarily developers, AI product companies and enterprises that pay per API call or under enterprise contracts, rather than consumers paying subscriptions. The company reports processing more than one billion API queries per month (September 2025), a different measure from the one billion cumulative queries it reported a year earlier. Its positioning is no longer "a better search engine" but the real-time web intelligence layer underneath other companies' AI products.
You.com in one line: It started as a search engine for people, and today it mainly sells live web information to other companies' AI apps and agents — paid for by how much they use it.
Founding story
Socher and McCann worked together at Salesforce Research, where Socher was Chief Scientist — a role he took after Salesforce acquired his earlier company, MetaMind — and McCann was a lead AI research scientist known for work including DecaNLP (2018) and contextualised word representations. Both had spent years on the problem of machines understanding language and questions. Their founding thesis for You.com was that the search interface itself was ready to be rebuilt with AI: instead of pages of links optimised for advertising, a search engine could understand a question, organise results around the user's intent, and eventually answer directly with sources. The company was founded in August 2020, developed in private, and opened a public beta in November 2021 with privacy and personalisation as headline themes. Corporate foundation, public launch and commercial expansion are distinct milestones: the company existed for over a year before the public product appeared, and its enterprise infrastructure business only became the centre of the company from 2024 onward.
04Founders and Leadership
Richard Socher
Co-founder & Chief Executive Officer
Socher earned his PhD at Stanford University, where his research focused on natural language processing and deep learning for language understanding. He founded MetaMind, an AI company acquired by Salesforce, and subsequently served as Salesforce's Chief Scientist. At You.com he is both chief executive and the company's most public technical voice, and he is also associated with the investment firm AIX Ventures. His academic background in question answering and language understanding shaped You.com's original positioning of search as an AI problem rather than an advertising problem. His pre-You.com research achievements belong to his academic and Salesforce career and should not be conflated with technology owned by You.com.

Bryan McCann
Co-founder · Original CTO · Now adviser and board member
McCann was a lead AI research scientist at Salesforce Research, with Stanford connections, and co-authored research including DecaNLP (2018), which framed ten NLP tasks as question answering, as well as earlier work on contextualised word vectors at Salesforce. He co-founded You.com with Socher and served as its original chief technology officer, leading the technical build of the search platform. In March 2026 he transitioned out of the CTO role to an advisory position and remained on the company's board, according to You.com's official announcement. He should not be described as the current CTO. The Information, as reported via Techmeme, reported that McCann left for Anthropic; that destination is a press report, not You.com's official wording.

Current technology leadership
Saahil Jain
Chief Technology Officer — appointed 17 March 2026
Jain joined You.com in 2020 as a founding engineer, shortly after the company incorporated, and progressed through Senior Engineering Manager to Head of AI before becoming CTO in March 2026, succeeding co-founder Bryan McCann. You.com's announcement describes him as a technical co-architect of the company's platform and places him at the centre of its search infrastructure and API strategy.

Note on dates: the launch was 22 October 2026 and the documentation is dated 23 October 2026; a later documentation changelog entry dated 26 October 2026 has been cited in some summaries of this release, but it does not change the launch date.
The evolution in four phases
Consumer search engine (2020–2022)
A web search interface with AI-assisted result organisation, personalisation and privacy positioning, competing for consumer queries against established search engines.
AI search and conversational assistance (2022–2024)
YouChat and generative search: answers generated from live web results with citations, multi-model experiences and consumer productivity features, sold partly through subscriptions.
Enterprise AI products (2024–2025)
Team and multiplayer AI plans, AI agents and enterprise productivity positioning, backed by the Series B and a growing emphasis on business customers over consumer traffic.
Search and inference infrastructure (2025– )
APIs as the core product: real-time search, content extraction, research, and routed inference on open-weight models, sold usage-based to developers and enterprises after the Series C.
The story so far: Founded in 2020, launched to the public in 2021, added conversational AI search, then from 2024 shifted its centre to enterprise APIs — with a new CTO, Saahil Jain, from 17 March 2026 and the Inference Router launched in October 2026.
Why the shift happened is partly a matter of record and partly interpretation. On the record: the company's own funding announcements from 2024 onward describe enterprise demand, API volume and agent use cases as its growth drivers. As interpretation: competing for consumer search queries against Google proved an expensive distribution battle for the whole category, while the rise of AI agents created paying demand for exactly the retrieval technology You.com had built for its own search engine. A consumer assistant and an infrastructure API also differ commercially: the assistant must win end-user attention, whereas the API is embedded inside other products and billed per call.
06Product Ecosystem
An “API” is just a way for one app to ask another service for help and get a tidy answer back. You.com offers different kinds of help: find pages (Search), read a page you already have (Contents), answer a question with sources (Answer), investigate a topic in depth (Research), do that for finance (Finance Research), or run an AI model for you (Inference Router).
You.com's current catalogue is a set of APIs rather than a single application. The products below reflect the company's published documentation and pricing pages as of the October 2026 research cutoff.
Web Search API
Real-time web and news search returning ranked, structured JSON results with snippets and metadata. Supports country, language and freshness parameters and between 1 and 100 results per call, with an optional livecrawl mode that extracts full-page content. Developers feed the results into a language model so answers are grounded in current sources.
Primary users: AI application and agent developers. Official guide
Contents API
Extracts the content of webpages the caller already knows about, returning clean Markdown or raw HTML plus metadata, with batch processing of multiple URLs per request. Unlike the Search API it does not discover relevant pages; it retrieves and parses specified ones, which makes it suited to RAG ingestion pipelines and agent browsing of known sources.
Primary users: RAG pipeline and agent developers. Official guide
Answer API
A single call that combines search and synthesis: the API retrieves relevant passages and generates an answer from those passages, with citations. Per You.com's pricing page, answers are generated only from retrieved content. It differs from the Web Search API by returning a finished, source-backed answer rather than raw results for the caller's own model to process.
Primary users: products needing cited answers without building their own retrieval stack.
Research API
Multi-step, agentic research: the service plans a query, searches and reads multiple sources, and returns a synthesised report with citations and, on most tiers, structured output. It is offered in effort tiers — Lite, Standard, Deep, Exhaustive and Frontier — trading depth against latency and price. Benchmark claims made for this API are company-reported; see the Growth and Achievements section.
Primary users: research workflows, analysts, agent builders. Official guide
Finance Research API
A research service specialised for financial questions, drawing on company filings, macroeconomic information, market data and news, and performing derived calculations across multiple sources with citations. You.com does not claim it guarantees investment accuracy, and neither does this profile: outputs are research assistance, not financial advice.
Primary users: financial services, fintech and investment research teams.
Inference Router
One API for inference on open-weight models hosted by third-party providers, with OpenAI-compatible and Anthropic-compatible request formats, automatic provider failover, integrated web grounding, usage tracking and model-specific pay-as-you-go billing with no platform fee, per the company. Company-claimed features include a 99.9%+ uptime SLA, zero data retention and 100% US hosting. The models reachable through the router — families such as DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM and Qwen have been reported in launch coverage — are third-party models, not models developed by You.com.
Primary users: enterprises wanting open-weight inference without managing multiple providers. Launch announcement
Different AI models live with different providers, a bit like different airlines. The Inference Router is one front desk: your app sends a request in a familiar format, You.com routes it to an available third-party open-weight model, can switch provider if one fails, and can add web grounding. The models are not made by You.com — You.com provides the routing.
- Need raw results? Web Search API.
- Need a ready answer? Answer API.
- Need deep digging? Research API. Need a model to run? Inference Router.
MCP server, SDKs and integrations
You.com also publishes a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that exposes its search tools to MCP-compatible agent environments. Secondary documentation summaries describe a free profile allowing 100 search queries per day without an API key, with API-key authentication for paid use, and compatibility with clients such as Claude Code and Cursor; the exact client list should be confirmed in the live documentation. Documented developer integrations include a Python SDK (youdotcom), REST APIs, and integrations with LangChain, LlamaIndex, LangGraph, CrewAI, the Vercel AI SDK, n8n and Zapier. These are documented integrations of varying maintenance origin — You.com-maintained, partner-built or community-built — and API compatibility with a framework is not, by itself, a strategic partnership.

Historical products: the consumer search engine, YouChat and consumer/team subscription plans (including YouPro) were central to You.com's earlier strategy. They are covered in this profile as history; the company's current commercial focus, per its 2025–2026 announcements, is the API platform above.
07AI Technology
Here is the whole idea in four steps. You ask a question. You.com searches the live web. It collects the most relevant pages as sources. The AI then writes its answer from those sources and shows citations, so a reader can check where the answer came from. This pattern is called retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG.
Illustrative flow based on how the documented Search, Answer and Research APIs are described on this page. Citations help checking, but they do not guarantee an answer is correct.
Natural language processing and information retrieval. You.com's founding expertise is in understanding questions and matching them to documents. Its platform interprets natural-language queries, retrieves and ranks web and news results, and returns the passages most relevant to the query. The company does not publicly disclose its search index size, crawling frequency or ranking architecture, and this profile does not estimate them. It is also important to separate the founders' earlier academic work — for example McCann's DecaNLP research at Salesforce — from You.com's commercial systems; the former explains the team's expertise, not the company's proprietary technology.
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). RAG is the pattern at the centre of You.com's business. A language model's knowledge is frozen at training time, so applications retrieve current documents at query time and pass them to the model as context. You.com supplies the retrieval half of that pattern — and, in the Answer and Research APIs, the synthesis half as well. Retrieved evidence lets an application cite real sources and answer questions about events after the model's training. RAG reduces, but does not eliminate, hallucination: a model can still misread a source, and a search can still retrieve a wrong or outdated page, which is why citations and source inspection remain necessary.
AI agents. Agents are software systems that plan multi-step work and call tools to do it. They need fresh facts at every step, so developers use You.com as the agent's web tool: the agent issues searches, reads extracted page content, and — through the Research API — can delegate an entire multi-source investigation. The MCP server packages the same capabilities for agent frameworks and coding tools that speak the Model Context Protocol.
Model-agnostic infrastructure. You.com does not market a proprietary foundation model. Its search and research APIs are designed to feed whichever model the customer already uses, and the Inference Router extends that neutrality to inference itself, routing between third-party open-weight models behind OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible interfaces so customers can switch models or fail over between providers without rewriting their application.
How a grounded request flows
Remember the pattern: Question → live search → sources → answer with citations. You.com supplies the search and sources, and in some products the answer or the model routing too. Grounding reduces errors, but it does not eliminate them — checking citations still matters.
Where inference happens depends on the product. With the Search, Contents, Answer and Research APIs, the customer's own application or model typically consumes You.com's output. With the Inference Router, You.com routes the request to a third-party model provider and returns the completion, optionally grounded with web results. API access is authenticated by API key, responses are JSON, and search calls accept freshness, country and language controls per the documentation.
08Business Model
It works like a meter. Each time a customer's app makes a search, reads a page, runs a research job, or uses routed inference, that use is counted — per call, per page, per job, or per token — and billed. Bigger customers can sign enterprise contracts for higher limits, support and privacy options. A free starting credit and a daily free search allowance help new developers try it first.
API usage-based revenue is the core of You.com's current model. Each product is metered in its own unit — per search call, per extracted page, per research job, or per token of routed inference — so customers pay in proportion to volume. A free tier with a starting credit and a daily free Web Search allowance serves as the acquisition funnel, converting developers into paying accounts as usage grows.
Enterprise revenue layers contracts on top of metered usage: custom pricing, higher rate limits, premium support and privacy terms such as zero data retention, for organisations deploying You.com inside regulated or large-scale products. The Inference Router's pitch — enterprise-grade reliability, SLAs and US hosting for open-weight models — is aimed squarely at this segment.
Historical consumer revenue. During its consumer phase You.com sold subscriptions, including YouPro and team/multiplayer plans. Those offerings belong to the company's earlier strategy; current company materials emphasise the API business, and this profile does not present the historical subscription plans as the company's current flagship offering. Whether any consumer plan remains purchasable should be confirmed on the live site at the time of reading.
Before → after: Before, money mainly came from consumer and team subscriptions in its search-engine phase. Now, the documented focus is metered API use plus enterprise contracts. Its actual revenue and profit are not publicly disclosed.
Financial disclosure. You.com is a private company. Its revenue, ARR in absolute terms, gross margins and profitability are not publicly disclosed. The only growth figures in the public record are company-reported ones attached to funding announcements — for example "ARR grew 500% since January 2024" (September 2024) — which are directional claims by the company, not audited financials, and are not restated here as verified revenue.
09Funding and Investors
Investors have put money into You.com in stages called “rounds”. The company reported $99 million raised in total after its $50 million Series B in September 2024, then raised another $100 million in its Series C in September 2025 — about $199 million in total. At that 2025 round, the company was reported to be valued at $1.5 billion. That value belongs to 2025; it is not a confirmed 2026 value, and money raised is not the same as revenue.
📈 Funding at a glance — two verified milestones
Led by Georgian. Company-reported total after this round: $99 million.
Led by Cox Enterprises via Socium Ventures. Reported valuation at the time: $1.5 billion (2025).
| Date | Round | Amount | Lead / participants | Reported valuation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020–2022 | Seed / Series A | Not separately confirmed | Earlier rounds are included within the company's reported $99 million cumulative total as of September 2024; individual round amounts and leads were not re-verified for this profile and are not stated here. | Not publicly disclosed |
| 4 September 2024 | Series B | $50 million | Led by Georgian; with Salesforce Ventures, NVIDIA, Gen Digital, SBVA (formerly SoftBank Ventures Asia), DuckDuckGo, Day One Ventures and others. Total funding after this round: $99 million (company announcement). | Not publicly disclosed |
| 3 September 2025 | Series C | $100 million | Led by Cox Enterprises via Socium Ventures; with Georgian, Salesforce Ventures and Norwest. | $1.5 billion, reported at the time of this round (September 2025) |
- Total raised: about $199 million in verified funding.
- Biggest round: $100 million Series C, September 2025.
- Valuation: $1.5 billion — reported in 2025, not confirmed for 2026.
Cumulative verified funding is therefore approximately $199 million — the $99 million total the company reported after the Series B, plus the $100 million Series C — consistent with TechCrunch's PitchBook-based summary that You.com had raised "more than $190 million" as of January 2026. Two cautions apply to the headline valuation: the $1.5 billion figure dates from September 2025 and describes that financing round, and no more recent valuation has been publicly reported. Funding raised is not revenue, and a round valuation is not a current market value.
10API Pricing
The rates below are taken from You.com's official pricing page as indexed in October 2026 and were the published rates at the research cutoff of 27 October 2026. API prices change; verify them on the live pricing page before relying on them commercially.

11Customers and Industries
You.com names relatively few customers publicly. The organisations below are classified by the nature of the relationship actually documented; an investor is not automatically a customer, and an integration is not automatically either.
| Organisation | Industry | Relationship | Documented basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| DuckDuckGo | Consumer search / privacy | API user and Series B investor — two distinct roles | Named among API users in September 2025 Series C coverage; listed as a participant in the September 2024 Series B. |
| Windsurf | AI software development | API user / customer | Named in September 2025 Series C coverage of You.com's API customer base. |
| Harvey | Legal technology | API user / customer | Named in September 2025 Series C coverage of You.com's API customer base. |

Where the infrastructure is used
- AI agent development — giving agents and coding assistants live web access, source retrieval and delegated research through the Search, Contents and Research APIs and the MCP server.
- Enterprise research — company and market research, competitive intelligence and internal business intelligence built on cited, current sources.
- Financial services — research over filings, market data and financial news with the Finance Research API; an aid to analysts, not a guarantee of investment accuracy.
- Legal technology — citation-aware discovery and research assistance over public information, as reflected by named legal-tech adoption above.
- Software development — documentation search, troubleshooting and real-time knowledge retrieval inside developer tools.
- Media and publishing — news discovery, topic research and source gathering against live coverage.
12Competitive Position
You.com does not compete with one set of rivals; each of its product lines faces a different field, and it does not compete with every company below across its whole range. This profile compares segments and product overlap only, and publishes no accuracy or quality ranking, because no independent, like-for-like ranking was verified.
| Segment | Competitors | Overlap with You.com | Key differences in positioning |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI search APIs | Brave Search API, Tavily, Exa, Perplexity Sonar API, SerpAPI, Bing and Google search services | Real-time web results for AI applications | You.com bundles search with extraction, answers and research in one platform; rivals variously emphasise independent indexes, developer-first tooling, or answer generation. |
| AI research services | Perplexity's APIs and deep-research offerings; research features from major model providers | Multi-step, cited research | You.com sells research as a model-agnostic API with effort tiers; provider-tied services are typically bound to their own models. |
| Enterprise search | Glean and other enterprise retrieval platforms | Enterprise information access for AI | Enterprise search vendors focus mainly on a company's internal documents; You.com's documented strength is the public, live web. |
| Inference routing | OpenRouter, Together AI, Fireworks AI | Hosted access to open-weight models | You.com's router adds integrated web grounding and search-platform bundling; the others are primarily inference platforms differentiated on model breadth, price and throughput. |
You.com vs Perplexity: both companies began in AI search. Perplexity's centre of gravity remains a consumer answer engine plus its Sonar API; You.com has moved further toward selling infrastructure — search, research and, since October 2026, inference routing — to other companies. You.com vs Google Search: Google operates a consumer search product and advertising business at global scale; You.com today sells API access to live web data for AI products, a business Google does not offer in the same form. The two overlapped most directly during You.com's consumer phase.
13Privacy and Security
You.com's pricing page header states that the company is SOC 2 certified and that zero data retention (ZDR) is available. Both are company statements presented here as such; this profile did not independently audit the certification. Three qualifications matter for enterprise buyers:
- ZDR is an option, not a universal default. Availability is plan-dependent, and where a request is routed to a third-party inference provider, retention also depends on that provider's terms. It should not be assumed that every service and every model retains zero data by default.
- Inference Router claims are product-specific. The zero-retention and 100% US-hosting claims were made for the Inference Router launch; they are not automatically statements about every You.com service.
- Standard API controls apply. Access is authenticated with API keys, and enterprise agreements govern data handling contractually; the specific terms of any Data Processing Agreement are a matter for the customer's contract and are not publicly disclosed in general form.
Responsible AI considerations. Search-grounded answers carry obligations that pure generation does not: the quality and bias of ranking affect what an application "knows", sources can be wrong or manipulated, and web content has owners whose rights govern its reuse. You.com's citation-first design — answers generated from retrieved passages with sources exposed — is its main documented mitigation, letting downstream applications and end users inspect where an answer came from. It mitigates, but cannot eliminate, factual error.
14Growth and Achievements
Reported growth metrics — two different measures
1 billion cumulative queries
Reported in the September 2024 Series B announcement: total queries processed since the November 2021 launch, alongside "millions of active users" and ARR growth of 500% since January 2024. Company-reported.
1 billion API queries per month
Reported in the September 2025 Series C announcement: a monthly API run-rate reflecting the infrastructure business. This is a different measurement from the 2024 cumulative total and the two figures must not be compared as growth of the same metric. Company-reported.
Benchmarks — company-reported, not independently verified
You.com publishes benchmark results for its APIs. All figures below are company-reported claims from its pricing and article pages; their methodologies and independent reproduction status were not verified for this profile, and they should not be read as independently proven market leadership.
- SimpleQA: You.com claims 91.1% for the Web Search API and 93.48% for the Answer API. These are scores for two different endpoints and must not be merged into a single "You.com SimpleQA score".
- DeepSearchQA: the pricing page claims a "#1 in DeepSearchQA" position for the Research API and references an "AAAI Best Paper Award methodology".
- AAAI 2026 award claim: the exact paper, venue track and award category behind the AAAI Best Paper reference could not be independently verified in the research for this profile, and a January 2026 arXiv paper on DeepSearchQA (arXiv 2601.20975) should not be assumed to be that award paper. The claim is therefore recorded as a company-stated association, not a verified award.
- Other evaluations referenced by the company include BrowseComp and FRAMES; no verified scores are published here because like-for-like conditions and competitor versions were not established.
Risks and challenges
Documented context: You.com has already executed one difficult strategic pivot — away from consumer search, where distribution is dominated by Google and where its own subscription business competed for attention — and its history shows the cost of that market. Its current model also depends on third parties: open-weight model providers for the Inference Router, and the public web's continued accessibility for search.
Industry-wide risks (not specific findings about You.com): search and inference infrastructure is capital- and compute-intensive; large platform companies can bundle competing capabilities; web publishers are increasingly restricting crawling and content reuse on copyright grounds; and enterprise buyers impose rising security and data-residency requirements.
Researcher interpretation: You.com's opportunity and its risk are the same fact — it sells a layer that sits between applications and both the web and model providers. If agentic software keeps growing, that layer becomes more valuable; if model providers or cloud platforms absorb retrieval and routing into their own stacks, an independent intermediary must keep winning on quality, neutrality and price.
Future strategy
Confirmed direction (from the company's own 2025–2026 announcements): expansion of the enterprise API platform funded by the Series C, deeper agentic research, MCP-based agent tooling, and the Inference Router's model-agnostic inference with web grounding. Industry trends supporting that direction include the growth of tool-using agents and enterprise demand for auditable, cited AI outputs. Analysis: further model and provider additions to the router, and deeper enterprise data-governance features, are plausible continuations of the announced strategy — but no future funding round, acquisition, launch date or financial forecast is documented, and none is predicted here.

You.com was founded in August 2020. Its consumer search engine launched in public beta in November 2021.
4. Where is You.com headquartered?
You.com is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, United States.
5. Who is the CEO of You.com?
Richard Socher, the company's co-founder, is its chief executive officer.
6. Who is Bryan McCann?
Bryan McCann is You.com's co-founder and its original chief technology officer, and a former lead AI research scientist at Salesforce Research known for work including DecaNLP. In March 2026 he moved to an advisory role and remained on the company's board.
7. Who is You.com's current CTO?
Saahil Jain has been CTO since 17 March 2026. He joined You.com in 2020 as a founding engineer and previously served as Head of AI. Bryan McCann is no longer CTO.
8. Is You.com a search engine or an AI infrastructure company?
Both, historically in sequence. It launched as a consumer AI search engine (2021) and, from 2024 onward, repositioned as an AI infrastructure company selling search, research and inference APIs to developers and enterprises, which is its current focus.
9. Why did You.com move toward enterprise AI?
Its funding announcements from 2024 onward cite enterprise demand, API volume and AI agent use cases as its growth drivers. Consumer search, by contrast, requires winning query distribution against entrenched incumbents; selling the underlying retrieval technology to other companies monetised the asset You.com had already built.
10. What is You.com's Web Search API?
A real-time search API returning ranked web and news results as structured JSON with snippets and metadata, with country, language and freshness controls and 1–100 results per call, plus optional full-page content extraction (livecrawl). It costs $5 per 1,000 calls at the rates published in October 2026.
11. What is the Research API?
An agentic research service that plans a question, searches and reads multiple sources, and returns a synthesised, cited report. It is sold in effort tiers — Lite, Standard, Deep, Exhaustive and Frontier — that trade research depth against latency and price.
12. What is the Answer API?
A single-call API that searches the web and generates an answer from the retrieved passages, with citations. Unlike the Web Search API, which returns raw results for your own model to process, the Answer API returns a finished, source-backed answer. It costs $5 per 1,000 calls at the rates published in October 2026.
13. What is the Contents API?
An extraction API that retrieves the content of webpages you already have URLs for, returning clean Markdown or raw HTML plus metadata, with batch processing. It does not discover pages; the Web Search API does that. It costs $1 per 1,000 pages at the rates published in October 2026.
14. What is the Finance Research API?
A research API specialised for financial questions, drawing on company filings, macroeconomic data, market information and financial news, and performing derived calculations across sources with citations. It costs $110 per 1,000 calls at the rates published in October 2026, and it is a research aid, not a guarantee of investment accuracy.
15. What is the You.com Inference Router?
Launched on 22 October 2026, the Inference Router is a single API for inference on third-party open-weight models, accepting OpenAI-compatible and Anthropic-compatible requests, with automatic provider failover, integrated web grounding, usage tracking and model-specific pay-as-you-go billing. You.com claims a 99.9%+ uptime SLA, zero data retention and 100% US hosting for the service.
16. Does You.com develop its own AI models?
You.com does not market a proprietary foundation model. Its platform is model-agnostic: its search and research APIs feed whichever model a customer uses, and the Inference Router provides access to other providers' open-weight models. Models reachable through You.com — such as the DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM or Qwen families reported in launch coverage — are not You.com models.
17. How does You.com make money?
Primarily through usage-based API pricing — per search call, extracted page, research job or inference token — and through enterprise contracts with custom pricing, higher limits, premium support and privacy options. Earlier in its history it also sold consumer and team subscriptions.
18. How much funding has You.com raised?
Approximately $199 million in verified funding: the company reported $99 million in total funding after its September 2024 Series B, and then raised a further $100 million in its September 2025 Series C.
19. What was You.com's 2025 valuation?
You.com was reported to be valued at $1.5 billion at its Series C in September 2025. That figure belongs to that financing round; a current 2026 valuation is not publicly disclosed.
20. Who are You.com's investors?
Verified investors include Cox Enterprises (through Socium Ventures, which led the Series C), Georgian (which led the Series B), Salesforce Ventures, Norwest, NVIDIA, Gen Digital, SBVA, DuckDuckGo and Day One Ventures.
21. Is You.com free?
There is free access to get started: a $100 starting credit and a free Web Search allowance of 100 queries per day, subject to documented limits, and a free tier of the MCP server. Beyond those allowances, usage is billed per the published rates.
22. How much does the You.com API cost?
At the rates published in October 2026: Web Search $5 per 1,000 calls; Contents $1 per 1,000 pages; Answer $5 per 1,000 calls; Research from $12 (Lite) to $450 (Exhaustive) per 1,000 calls, with Frontier on enterprise terms; Finance Research $110 per 1,000 calls; Inference Router priced per token by model. Rates change, so check the live pricing page.
23. How does You.com help AI agents?
It acts as the agent's web layer: agents call its APIs to search the live web, extract page content, and delegate multi-step research, receiving structured, cited results they can reason over. The MCP server exposes the same tools to MCP-compatible agent frameworks and coding tools.
24. Does You.com provide real-time web data?
Yes. Real-time and fresh web and news retrieval — as opposed to a model's fixed training data — is the core of its Web Search, Answer and Research APIs, which support freshness controls.
25. Is You.com suitable for enterprise applications?
Enterprise use is its stated current focus: it offers enterprise contracts, company-stated SOC 2 certification, zero-data-retention options, SLA-backed inference and US hosting claims for the Inference Router. Buyers should verify the specific terms — especially provider-dependent retention — in their own agreements.
26. Does You.com support MCP?
Yes. You.com publishes a Model Context Protocol server exposing its search tools to MCP-compatible clients, with a free usage profile and API-key authentication for paid use, per its documentation.
27. What is the difference between You.com and Perplexity?
Both began in AI search. Perplexity's business centres on a consumer answer engine and its Sonar API; You.com has moved further into infrastructure, selling search, contents, answer, research, finance research and inference-routing APIs to other companies in a model-agnostic way.
28. What is the difference between You.com and Google Search?
Google Search is a consumer search engine funded mainly by advertising. You.com today is primarily a B2B API platform that sells live web data and research to AI products; the two competed directly mainly during You.com's consumer search phase (2021–2024).
29. What security protections does You.com offer?
You.com states SOC 2 certification on its pricing page, offers zero data retention as a plan- and provider-dependent option, uses API-key authentication, and claims 100% US hosting and zero retention for the Inference Router. These are company statements; retention terms for routed third-party models depend on the provider.
30. What are You.com's future business opportunities?
Based on its announced direction: growth in agentic software that needs live information, enterprise demand for cited and auditable AI outputs, and model-agnostic inference as open-weight models improve. Its corresponding risks include platform providers bundling similar capabilities and restrictions on web content access. No specific future funding, launch or acquisition has been announced.
