Biography of Ashish Vaswani

Home  /  AI Inventors  /  Ashish Vaswani
Ashish Vaswani is an AI researcher best known for co-authoring the revolutionary 2017 paper "Attention Is All You Need", introducing the Transformer architecture that powers modern LLMs.

Ashish Vaswani is a distinguished computer scientist and artificial intelligence researcher. He is best known as one of the key co-authors of the landmark 2017 research paper, "Attention Is All You Need", which introduced the Transformer architecture. This deep learning model has since become the foundational architecture behind modern Large Language Models (LLMs), including GPT-4, Claude, Gemini, and Llama.

Education and Early Career

Vaswani completed his undergraduate studies in India before moving to the United States for his graduate studies. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Southern California (USC) in 2014, where his research focused on machine translation and structured prediction under the supervision of Liang Huang and David Chiang.

Google Brain and the Transformer

In 2016, Vaswani joined Google Brain as a research scientist. It was here that he collaborated with a team of seven other researchers to address the limitations of Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in processing sequential language data. By introducing the "self-attention mechanism," the Transformer allowed models to process entire sequences of text in parallel, vastly improving training speed and semantic comprehension.

Entrepreneurship

In 2021, Vaswani co-founded Adept AI alongside Niki Parmar and David Luan, aiming to build AI agents that could automate software tasks. In 2023, he co-founded Essential AI, a startup focused on building enterprise-grade AI systems that make computer interaction more intuitive and productive.
