Distributed Systems at Google

Dean joined Google in 1999 as one of its earliest software engineers. He designed and implemented the indexing and search systems that allowed Google to scale to billions of queries. To handle this scale, he co-designed foundational distributed systems including MapReduce, Bigtable, and Spanner, which revolutionized data processing and storage globally.

Deep Learning and Google Brain

In 2011, Dean co-founded Google Brain with Andrew Ng and Greg Corrado, initiating Google's shift toward deep learning. He led the development of DistBelief and its successor, TensorFlow, which became the open-source library that powered the global deep learning boom. Under his leadership, Google AI pioneered hardware accelerators (TPUs) and scaled neural networks to unprecedented size.
