Academic and Early Deep Learning Contributions

Vinyals earned his degree in telecommunications engineering from UPC in Barcelona, followed by a Master's from UC Berkeley and a Ph.D. from UC San Diego. During a residency at Google, he co-authored the seminal paper "Sequence to Sequence Learning with Neural Networks" (Seq2Seq) with Ilya Sutskever and Quoc Le, which laid the mathematical foundation for modern translation and language generation.

DeepMind: AlphaStar and Gemini

Joining DeepMind in 2016, Vinyals led the team behind AlphaStar, the first AI system to defeat professional human players in the complex real-time strategy game StarCraft II. In recent years, he has served as a co-lead researcher for Gemini, coordinating Google's response to next-generation multimodal architectures.
