Vipul Ved Prakash – Together AI CEO & Open-Source AI Pioneer

Home  /  AI Inventors  /  Vipul Ved Prakash
Vipul Ved Prakash is the co-founder and CEO of Together AI, a leading AI cloud platform focused on democratizing access to open-source generative AI. A serial entrepreneur, he previously founded Cloudmark, Topsy Labs, and Sense/Net, building scalable internet and AI infrastructure over more than two decades. Through Together AI, he enables millions of developers and thousands of organizations to deploy AI models efficiently while championing open-source innovation.

Vipul Ved Prakash was born in New Delhi, India, in the late 1970s. His journey into technology began with a moment of profound realization at age 12. Sitting in the computer lab of Apeejay School in Noida, he wrote a simple BASIC program that asked "What's your name?" and responded with "Hi Vipul, how are you?" He recalls: "It still gives me goosebumps" . This modest interaction sparked a lifelong fascination with the idea that machines could exhibit intelligence.

Prakash enrolled at St. Stephen's College, Delhi—one of India's most prestigious institutions—studying mathematics, physics, and computer science. However, driven by an intense passion for building software, he made the unconventional decision to drop out before completing his degree . This decision, made when dropping out carried social stigma, reflected his conviction that practical experience and self-directed learning could outweigh formal credentials.

Beyond academics, Prakash demonstrated exceptional discipline in table tennis, playing professionally for the Food Corporation of India from 1990 to 1995 .

Career Beginnings: The Internet Pioneering Years (1996–2000)

Prakash's entrepreneurial journey began in 1996 when he co-founded Sense/Net, one of India's first privately-owned internet service providers. This venture gave him frontline experience with emerging internet infrastructure during India's digital awakening .

In 1999, while working extensively with email, Prakash encountered a growing nuisance—spam. He built an open-source collaborative intelligence system that allowed users to report spam emails; the system would then block or filter those messages for everyone. Within a year, over 10 million computers were running "Vipul's Razor" . This early success demonstrated his ability to create systems that scale virally through community participation.

Cloudmark: Commercializing Anti-Spam Technology (2001–2008)

In 2001, Prakash co-founded Cloudmark with Napster co-founder Jordan Ritter to commercialize his anti-spam technology. The company built a reputation for innovative email security solutions and was later acquired by cybersecurity firm Proofpoint in 2017 for $110 million .

This period established Prakash as a credible entrepreneur with proven execution capability. In 2003, MIT Technology Review recognized him as one of the Top 100 Young Innovators in the World (TR100) .

Topsy Labs: Social Media Search at Scale (2007–2013)

In 2007, Prakash founded Topsy Labs, a social media search and analytics company. The team built an indexing system from the ground up that indexed over a trillion social posts with real-time capabilities "up-to-the-second," sorting through noise and misinformation .

Apple acquired Topsy in 2013 for $200 million . Prakash stayed on as Senior Director until 2018, working on Siri search and AI-related projects . This acquisition validated his ability to build scalable data infrastructure and positioned him at the intersection of AI and distributed systems.

Together AI: Democratizing AI Infrastructure (2022–Present)

The Founding Vision

In early 2022, a Google DeepMind paper demonstrating AI models solving competitive programming problems caught Prakash's attention. Around the same time, OpenAI's GPT-2 was gaining momentum. "We felt this was going to be something remarkable," he recalls .

However, a critical problem existed: access. "The cloud was built for CPU computing. GPU access was expensive and limited," he explains . For researchers, especially in academia, the infrastructure to train large models simply didn't exist.

This gap became the founding insight behind Together AI, launched in June 2022. The company brought together an exceptional team:

  1. Ce Zhang (CTO) – Associate Professor at ETH Zurich, Peking University alumnus
  2. Chris Ré – Stanford Computer Science Professor (co-founded SambaNova)
  3. Percy Liang – Stanford Professor, Director of CRFM
  4. Tri Dao – Chief Scientist, author of FlashAttention

The Open-Source Strategy

Together AI positioned itself as an "AI Native Cloud" providing access to open-source models including DeepSeek, MiniMax, Kimi, Llama, and Mistral. The business model is simple: help enterprises run AI workloads at dramatically lower costs—typically 6 to 20 times cheaper than closed systems like OpenAI or Anthropic .

A key differentiator was the RedPajama-V2 dataset, comprising over 30 trillion tokens—one of the largest freely available resources for training LLMs .

Explosive Growth

Together AI's growth trajectory is remarkable:

Metric20242026

Annual Bookings$100M$1.15B
Token Volume (monthly)~300B~400T
Valuation~$1B$8.3B

The company has scaled to over 1 million developers and 50,000 companies, including Zoom, Quora, Salesforce, Cursor, Cognition, and Decagon .

The Series C Funding (July 2026)

In July 2026, Together AI raised $800 million in Series C funding led by Aramco Ventures, with participation from Vista Equity Partners, General Catalyst, Emergence Capital, Nvidia, Salesforce Ventures, March Capital, Pegatron, and SentinelOne's S Ventures . The valuation surged to $8.3 billion—more than doubling from $3.3 billion in February 2025 .

The company expects computing capacity to expand roughly 50-fold over the next five years .

Leadership Philosophy

Prakash's leadership is defined by unwavering commitment to open-source principles. "The future of AI won't be owned by a few companies," he states. "It will be built by millions of developers and businesses, and open-source models are making that possible" .

He views AI as "a foundational resource for the modern economy, every bit as essential as electricity, bandwidth or capital." His mission: "ensure that intelligence is abundant, not expensive" .

Quotes and Their Context

"This is the most important technology humans will build. And it's a huge risk if the best models are closed and controlled by just one or two companies."

Context: Expressing concern about AI power concentration, arguing open ecosystems are essential for innovation and resilience.

"We felt this was going to be something remarkable."

Context: Recalling early 2022 when Google DeepMind's research and GPT-2's momentum convinced him to pivot to AI infrastructure.

"AI should not live behind closed doors. The future belongs to open systems that anyone can build on."
