Introduction

Yann LeCun is a French-American computer scientist and researcher. He is the Chief AI Scientist at Meta and a founding pioneer of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). He co-received the Turing Award in 2018.

Convolutional Neural Networks

In the late 1980s, LeCun developed Convolutional Neural Networks, inspired by the biological visual cortex. He designed LeNet-5, a CNN that was widely used by banks to read handwritten checks, proving neural networks could solve real-world problems.

Meta FAIR & Open Source

In 2013, Mark Zuckerberg hired LeCun to establish Meta's Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) lab. He advocates for open-science models, guiding the release of open weights architectures like LLaMA.
